Just NZ Holidays

Tie a fly and break out the bait, it’s time for an introduction to fishing, kiwi style.

We’re pretty stoked with our way of life down here, and fishing is a big part of it. Whether it’s fly–fishing for trout on a river or lake, or taking to the ocean in search of something bigger, a fishing tour is one of the great ways to see New Zealand. We’ve got three of our favourite NZ fishing tours detailed below, but if you want to learn more, drop us a line and we’ll be glad to hook you up. Ok, ok, enough with the fishing puns!

An awesome Kingfish from Bay of Islands

Based in the incredible Bay of Islands, Earl Grey Fishing Charters bring a wealth of experience (over 30 years’ worth) and local knowledge to deliver a fishing experience that you’ll never forget. The Bay of Islands are known as one of New Zealand’s most spectacular areas, but also as the home of the nation’s most exciting fishing charters, so get ready to go after some seriously diverse fish! The more exotic species you can catch on the Earl Grey include snapper, marlin, kingfish, tuna and kahawai. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first–timer, Captain Steve Butler and his crew will have you full of confidence and ready to rock. Make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins, whales and seals too!

Jetboat Fishing

As long–time fans of both fly–fishing and jetboating, the good folk at Fiordland Outdoors did the sensible thing and combined the two. And a match made in heaven was born! Jet boat fishing is the quintessential kiwi experience in one of NZ’s most beautiful places: Fiordland. Invented right here in New Zealand, the jet boat is the perfect way to explore Fiordland’s beautiful rivers and lakes, backed by the soundtrack of a humming V8 engine.

Your jet–fishing adventure puts you on the trail of the elusive brown trout, but with your expert local guide leading the way, you’ll have tight lines in no time. Drift downstream at a relaxed pace as you take in the sights, feast on homemade chocolate cookies, and catch plenty of gorgeous trout! Jet boat fishing is a firm favourite with visitors and is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Chris Jolly Outdoors, Taupo

Preparing a day of fly fishing

A Taupo institution, Chris Jolly Outdoors take the great outdoors and make them your personal playground. Choose between a fly–fishing adventure on the river, or a private charter on Lake Taupo. The area delivers some of the world’s best fly–fishing, and you’ll be chasing both the crafty brown and boisterous rainbow trout.

Strap on your waders and hit the riverbanks for a serious trout fishing excursion, where you’ll learn the art of casting and blending in so as not to scare away those precious fish; or take a chartered boat on the lake where the whole family can relax and soak up the sights, while the anglers in the group go to work! A delicious lunch and drinks are provided, and your experienced skipper will ensure you don’t miss anything as you cruise past beautiful Māori rock carvings and hidden spots.
